Psychoanalysis centres around discovering and analysing a client’s deep-rooted unconscious thoughts. Founded by Sigmund Freud, it focuses on releasing and interpreting repressed experiences or memories, often from childhood, through free associations, fantasies and dreams.
Psychoanalytic therapy is a form of therapy based on Freud’s theories. Usually less intensive than psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic therapy is concerned with the way a client’s behaviours and thoughts are influenced by their unconscious mind. This form of therapy is usually considered a long-term choice, and aims to facilitate deep-seated changes in emotional development and personality.
